“It is of great use to the sailor to know the length of his line, though he cannot with it fathom all the depths of the ocean.”
John Locke, An Essay Concerning Human Understanding
Locke was keenly aware the human mind wasn’t up to the task of knowing everything. But if so, what are we missing? Drawing upon material from a recent book, we investigate our cognitive limitations by taking a look at some underappreciated scientific conundrums; things that simply can’t be, but are. We conclude by reflecting on what these limitations mean in our daily lives.
Dr. E. Andrew (Andy) Boyd is a scheduled contributor to the Engines of Our Ingenuity, a nationally syndicated radio program and podcast produced by Houston’s National Public Radio affiliate, KUHF, part of Houston Public Media. Evan Hadingham, Senior Science Editor at NOVA, has called Engines “the best-written short-form science podcast on the internet,” adding, “Every episode is a gem.” Dr. Boyd received his B.A. with honors at Oberlin College with majors in mathematics and economics and his Ph.D. in operations research from MIT. He was elected an INFORMS Fellow in 2007 and was a co-recipient of the INFORMS Impact Prize in 2016. His most recent book is Beyond Comprehension: A Scientific Look at the Challenge of Knowing Everything.
