I. PURPOSE
Kansas City Oasis is a community of compassion and reason that seeks to create a safe and welcoming environment for freethinkers to celebrate the human experience in a positive way. We are grateful to all who participate in the activities of our community and contribute towards its variety of functions.
This Code is intended to promote ethical conduct and define the expectations for participation in order to foster the healthy administration of our community. Kansas City Oasis welcomes all who embrace our Core Values, and abide by this Code of Conduct.
II. CORE VALUES
At Kansas City Oasis, we think:
People are more important than beliefs.
Human hands solve human problems.
Reality is known through reason.
Meaning comes from making a difference.
Be accepting and be accepted.
III. SCOPE
This policy applies to all participants who attend Kansas City Oasis, including organizers who facilitate events and directors who oversee the organization’s administration.
IV. RULES AND EXPECTATIONS
A. HARASSMENT
Kansas City Oasis strives for a community of ethical conduct where people are treated with kindness and compassion. To protect the community and promote a positive experience, Kansas City Oasis prohibits harassment, including, but not limited to, physical violent behavior, sexual harassment, name-calling, abusive language, insinuation, innuendo, and bullying of any kind. We urge our community to ask for unequivocal consent for all activism, philanthropic, and social activities. This includes honoring personal boundaries. Refrain from touching or hugging other people without consent. Persistent solicitation of any kind, after clear refusal, can create a hostile environment and will not be tolerated.
B. DISCRIMINATION
Kansas City Oasis seeks to create a welcoming environment where diversity is a valued. Therefore, Kansas City Oasis prohibits discrimination, including, but not limited to, race, national origin, citizenship, gender, gender identity, gender presentation, sexual orientation, body size, appearance, disability, age, pregnancy, or religion.
C. DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR
It is important to Kansas City Oasis that its events are safe and participants are comfortable. Any generally disruptive behavior that causes concern, discomfort, or mental anguish to participants, or distracts the organization from its activities is prohibited. This includes misuse or mistreatment of Kansas City Oasis property or the property of any venue hosting Kansas City Oasis events.
D. PRIVACY
Some participants prefer for their involvement with Kansas City Oasis to remain private, and we respect their wishes. Therefore, it is prohibited to disclose the involvement of a participant outside of Oasis without the permission of that participant.
E. ILLEGAL ACTIVITY
Kansas City Oasis abides by all local, state, and federal laws and reserves the right to notify the appropriate law enforcement authorities of any potential violations of law.
F. THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS RESERVES THE RIGHT TO PROHIBIT ANY OTHER BEHAVIOR IT DEEMS INAPPROPRIATE OR DISRUPTIVE.
V. REPORTING VIOLATIONS
If you have observed any violations of this policy, please notify a member of the Board of Directors immediately. A current list of the members of the Board of Directors and their contact information can be found on our website at https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/.
A. PROCESS
A formal complaint made to a member of the Board of Directors will initiate an investigation by a panel of Board members. This panel will interview all parties involved and any witnesses before making a determination of findings and any actions that need to be taken.
B. PRIVACY
We care about the privacy of our community members. Anyone involved in a formal investigation by the Board of Directors can expect their privacy to be protected to the best of our ability. During an investigation, other community members may be contacted to verify information. The Board will request that anyone contacted keep information discussed confidential.
C. CONFLICT OF INTEREST
We recognize that due to various connections and relationships within members of this community, someone may need to report violations of an individual connected to a member of the Board of Directors, or even directly involving a member of the board. To protect all involved parties, any member of the Board with a close personal relationship to any of the involved parties, including the reporter, will be excluded from the investigation, discussions of the complaint, findings of the investigation, or decisions about consequences of the investigation. If you are concerned that one of the Board members has a conflict of interest with an involved party, please include your concerns in the complaint. The Board will make a determination of conflict of interest and any necessary exclusions of that member during the process.
VI. DETERMINATION OF A RULES VIOLATION
Determination of a rules violation will be at the sole discretion of the Board of Directors. At events when a Board Member is not present, the organizers/hosts have authority to enforce this policy.
VII. ADJUDICATION
In the event of a policy violation, the following actions may be taken:
Warn the participant
Ask the participant to leave the event
Exclude the participant from future Oasis events
Violators will be appropriately notified. In order to ensure the safety of Kansas City Oasis events, law enforcement will be notified of violators who do not comply with adjudication and cause disruption to our events.
