Pioneers to the river bend who would become Kansas Citians said goodbye to wood and hello to both coal and oil over one lifetime. Each fuel left its stamp on the city. Then gasoline created the sprawling metro area we have today. Now we find ourselves in a dysfunctional relationship with gasoline. In the last decade city government has reduced its dependence on this fuel, but we can and must do so much more.

“The Once and Future Kansas City: A Love Story of Wood, Coal and Gasoline” brings this thriving city history to life through the lens of the fuels that built it and challenges us to change our habits once again.

Twyla Dell, Ph.D., has been an environmental educator for many years. This is her seventh book.
